Appointed on probation to the Ocean Accident & Guarantee motor department on 27 May 1929 aged 15.
Took part one of his CII exams and was appointed to permanent staff 1 June 1932. Became a member of the Allied Offices accident claims department.
Was a POW in Italy and "decided to make a break for it when that country collapsed".
Had taught himself Italian in captivity and lived for nine months behind German lines travelling some 250 miles across Italy and 500 miles in the mountains.
