The North British & Mercantile Insurance Company was the first Aviva Group company to begin operations in Greece in 1869. It wasn't long, however, before others opened for business across the country.
On September 2, the North British & Mercantile Insurance Company, later part of the Commercial Union Assurance Company, appoints Messrs Elias Fernandez & Co agent for Salonica. The Northern Assurance Company, later part of Commercial Union, appoints Fells & Co agent for Zante (Zakinthos).
Fernandez & Co resigns as agent for North British & Mercantile. The company is now represented by David Morpary.
North British & Mercantile has established an agency in Athens by this date.
On April 20, Commercial Union appoints Joseph Isaac Modiano fire agent for Salonica. In October, Mr Modiano is also appointed marine agent.
The Northern appoints Moise J. Faraggi agent for Serrai.
On November 1, Commercial Union appoints Stephanis Antonio Micrulachi, who is based in Corfu, agent for the Kingdom of Greece.
Commercial Union now has sub agents in Patras, Cephelonia, Piraeus and Athens.
In February, Commercial Union fire agent, Micrulachi, resigns and is replaced by Charilaos Demetriades of Athens. The company’s net premium income for fire is £6.
On February 23, the Commercial Union agent Demetriades resigns and is replaced by E Stephanos & A Empedocles of Athens, with sub agents in Syra, Volo and Corfu. In the same month, Commercial Union opens a marine agency in Greece, under Mr Demetrius G Rhally.
On July 6, the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society appoints Messrs Dino Fernandes & Vittorio Sciaky agent for Salonica.
Commercial Union records a net premium income of £1,931 for Salonica.
On July 2, North British & Mercantile appoints Daffa Bros. as fire agent for Greece.
Commercial Union net premium income in Greece increases to £534.
On March 1, Commercial Union appoints Demetrius G Rhally, based in Athens, fire agent for Greece.
On July 4, Commercial Union appoints the Commercial & Industrial Union Insurance Company, under the management of Mr G Plytas, as its Greek agent.
Norwich Union Fire appoints Henderson & Co agent in Athens.
Roger Hall, from the General Accident head office Perth, Scotland, visits the company’s agents in Salonica.
The Northern appoints Henderson & Co agent for Athens.
The General Accident agent for Greece, Dr. Papasoglou, is located at 7 Rue Edessis, Salonica.
On April 16, the Union Assurance Company, a subsidiary of Commercial Union, opens an agency, under Mr J Abbott, which is later known as E G Abbott.
The Scottish Union and National Insurance Company, later part of Norwich Union, appoints Messrs S P Moussouris & L A Poltitis as agent.
General Accident appoints Mr P Courtelly & Douma agent for Athens. The agency is located at 41 rue de l’Universite.
On October 5, Commercial Union appoints Rhally & Plytas as marine agent.
Norwich Union Fire appoints R & E Hill as agent for Athens. The agency will represent the company in Athens until 1941.
The General Accident chief agent for Athens and Smyrna is now Dr Papasoglou. Norwich Union Fire appoints Zannas & Mavragordates as agent.
General Accident opens a sub branch in Greece.
General Accident opens a full branch office in Athens, under Mr P Courtelly. The company’s Salonica agency is still under the management of Dr Papasoglou.
General Accident moves its Athens branch to 11a rue Paparigopolou. Mr P Courtelly and Mr A D Papasoglou resign.
The manager of the Athens branch of General Accident is now Mr Basil L. Avramidis. The company magazine for this year describes the branch as a “pioneer in many directions”. In December, General Accident appoints Alexopolous & Triantafyllis as agent. The appointment also applies to the company’s subsidiary, the English Insurance Company.
General Accident closes its Athens branch and appoints Alexoupolos & Triantafyllis agent for Greece. On June 26, the Yorkshire Insurance Company, later part of General Accident, appoints the Helleniki Joint Stock General Insurance Company of Athens as agents for Greece.
General Accident appoints Messrs J D Corcodilos & Sons of Piraeus as agent.
On June 20, the board of the Yorkshire receives a request from its manager for Greece, Etienne Castoyanni, for permission to begin transacting livestock insurance there.
1939 - 1945
Scottish Union and National forms the Acropolis Insurance Company to stop the company falling into enemy hands. The General of Athens is established by representatives of General Accident for the same purpose.
The Atlas Insurance Company SA is established.
The National Insurance Company of Great Britain Ltd and the Union Assurance Company, both subsidiaries of Commercial Union, have now established agencies in Greece.
With the Second World War over, General Accident resumes business through the representation of Mr D Corcodilos. Mr Corcodilos was a casualty of the war and his agency is now run by his wife and Mr Roumbos.
General Accident is now represented in Greece by X Rombous and Co.
On March 30, the Ocean Accident & Guarantee Corporation Ltd, a Commercial Union subsidiary, opens an agency in Greece, under Mr C Yamalis.
The General Accident branch staff under Mr Rombous includes Mr A Farmakis, inspector; Mr D Stolis, accountant and Mr J Lebessis, fire manager. The branch has a staff of 20 in total.
Norwich Union Fire purchases a share in the Illios Greek Insurance Company.
Norwich Union celebrates 50 years working with the R & W Hill fire agency of Athens. The agency is now called E J Hill & Sons.
Norwich Union Fire appoints the Moussouris–Politis Commercial Company as agent.
General Accident acquires a majority stake in the General of Athens. The Yorkshire appoints A P Constakis & Co as agent. On July 1, the new General Accident branch in Athens becomes operational, conducting all types of business except life, credit and hull. The branch address is 5/7 Christou Lada Street, Athens 124.
Commercial Union opens a branch in Greece.
On June 30, Xenophon G Roumbos retires as General Accident manager for Greece and general manager of the General of Athens. He is replaced by Mr B J Baskerville.
On October 1, Mr D A Long becomes general manager of General Accident in Athens.
The Atlas Insurance Company SA changes its name to Sun Alliance Insurance (Hellas) SA.
Commercial Union establishes the life company CU Vita AEAZ.
Norwich Union Fire transfers its agency business to Illios.
Norwich Union sells its Illios shareholding.
Sun Alliance Insurance (Hellas) SA changes its name to CGU Hellas General Insurance SA. In October CGU reaches an agreement in principle to sell its Greek life assurance company to Aspis Pronia AEGA. Following completion of the transaction, Aspis will be a distributor in Greece for investment products of the CGU group.
