Member of the Marine Department. Captured by the Japanese in Singapore on 15 February 1942. Was POW for 3.5 years and was quoted in Telegraph of 31 August 1945 "In the October after we were captured at Singapore we were crowded into railway wagons and taken to Siam. There we were set to work building the Bangkok-Moulmein railway. Many men died daily from starvation and from lack of drugs to combat tropical diseases. The survivors, working in the steaming jungle, became weak." "When told of the Japanese surrender by their guards, a knot of officers gathered around a Union Jack, produced by Major Ditton, and sang the National Anthem. The flag had been kept hidden in a blanket for 3.5 years after he had picked it up in a Singapore street."
